CRMX: wireless DMX explained

How LumenRadio CRMX works: transmitter, receivers, linking, good practice, and how to use it with lighting software and an Art-Net node.

The principle

CRMX (LumenRadio) carries a DMX universe over radio, in the 2.4 GHz band. It hops between frequencies to avoid channels used by Wi-Fi: that is what makes it reliable indoors and outdoors. A transmitter (TX) receives DMX over an XLR cable; receivers (RX), built into the fixture or in a box, output it.

Linking

  1. Set the transmitter to TX, on a universe colour.
  2. Start linking ("Link") with the receivers switched on and in range: they take the transmitter's colour.
  3. Receivers keep the link when switched off: redo it only if you change transmitter.

Several transmitters can work side by side, each with its receivers (one universe per transmitter).

With lighting software

CRMX doesn't replace the node: it extends one DMX port. With Halyx, the PC sends Art-Net or sACN to the node, a node port outputs DMX to the transmitter, and the linked fixtures receive the universe. The same universe can also go out on a cabled port.

Good habits

  • transmitter up high, in sight of the fixtures, away from metal structures;
  • check what receivers do on signal loss (cut out or hold the last value);
  • turn RDM off on the transmitter's port if it doesn't pass it.
